Whistleblower Thomas Drake used every internal channel available to whistleblowers before sharing declassified information that highlighted waste, fraud, abuse and illegality to the tune of $4 billion. For this, he was charged with ten felony counts, five of which fell under the Espionage Act.
“John Kiriakou, a former CIA analyst who disclosed U.S. waterboarding of a terrorism suspect to a reporter and was later prosecuted under the Espionage Act,” received two years in jail, lost his job and pension, and was forced to be away from his wife and five children.
